Definitely an underrated favorite. Took forever to feel like I had anything approaching a handle on it

Same, I was well over 40 hours in when I finished my first successful run, after many disastrous false starts. It gets much easier once you learn how to use carriers properly and once you know which fighting ships are worth investing in!

Awesome review. Guess it's about time I gave HighFleet another try. I like to think I have a strong stomach for hard-to-learn strategy games made by passionate obsessives, but it defeated me when I first tried it however many years ago. Suppose I put too much stock in the in-game tutorialization, which was kind of a rookie move given the game's pedigree.

You did an incredible job at analyzing the historical inspirations — I had no idea just how deep they went. Goated intro, too. Can't wait for Part 2!

Thank you! It's definitely a difficult game to learn - it teaches you to do maybe 1/4 of the things you should know how to do at the outset, then unceremoniously throws you into the campaign, and it likes to give misleading advice.

The fanbase also tends to follow suit - everything I saw kept urging players not to use the flagship in combat, because it's slow/expensive to repair, but on the other hand, it's ridiculously strong, and in some circumstances it's very much worth the tradeoff. However, it really is an experience like no other once you start to git gud and understand the mechanics.

I'll be getting more into the history and literary stuff in Part 2!
